Tiffany Classics “Curved Tank”

By the mid 1980’s, Oscar Waldan had secured a substantial stock of mechanical movements acquired from the many manufacturing companies who were liquidating them during the Swiss Quartz crisis. He would set out to redesign watches around these movements, repurposing once discarded complex mechanical movements and breathing new life into them through his creations. He leaned on his experience as a designer and his days spent with Roger Haas at Tissot and Gerald Genta at Universal Geneve.

He crafted his interpretations of how he thought these movements and watches should be represented. His design flair then attracted the attention of the vast network he had weaved through his past tenure and independent consulting work advising brands on product design that paved the way for his vision to create for himself. One brand that took notice was Tiffany & Co., whom Oscar had worked with previously during his earlier role as Vice President of Merchandising and Styling for Universal Geneve, which was owned and parented by the Holzer Watch Company, in which Oscar too played a role at the executive level.

Tiffany went on to purchase multiple small batch collections of highly complicated chronographs crafted in precious metals, designed and made by Oscar, powered by these high-end mechanical movements he had stockpiled. Upon their success, Tiffany expanded upon their contract with Oscar, at this point through Waldan International, and asked him to design a large collection of watches. This collection, named the “Tiffany Classics” would be comprised of both men and women’s watches, ranging from classy dress watches to beautifully ornate jewelry watches. All these pieces carried a secret “Waldan Creation” stamp on the inside case back, discretely distinguishing them from the other watches produced under the iconic Tiffany moniker.
