Oscar Waldan shines in the story of this exceptional neo-vintage watch, featuring the lesser recognized, Ekegren name. Henri Robert Ekegren (1823-1896) was a renowned Danish watchmaker who worked alongside the King of Denmark; he received recognition for his work with Urban Jürgensen, Henry Golay and Adolph Lange before starting his own business. His company was later purchased and revived By Ed Koehn, a watchmaker who had started his horological career at Patek Philippe, and produced complicated watches until the dissolution of the brand in the 1930’s.
By the 1990’s, Oscar Waldan had successfully seen his watches produced under the names of Tiffany & Co., Tourneau, and Ulysse Nardin. Oscar began producing updated versions of his earlier designs for these brands under the “Waldan International Co.” and “Waldan International” signatures. In the late 1990’s, Oscar registered the Ekegren name in the United States, officially producing watches under that signature from 2001 to 2007.
Only one model was produced, in limited quantities, under this name; an “Astronic Chronograph” complicated style watch, powered by an original and unmodified Zenith cal. 3019 “El Primero” automatic winding movement, which Oscar had acquired during the Swiss quartz crisis. It is estimated that less than 300 of these were created in total. Of these watches produced, most were crafted in 18K solid yellow and rose gold, with limited production in 18K white gold, and a handful of pieces made in solid platinum.
